Medical Research
When any parent is told of their child’s illness, disability or terminal condition two of the key questions that haunt them are ‘why my child?’ And ‘why our family?’
This is a perfectly natural reaction, but how do we answer them? Can answering these questions also provide a solution that will prevent others being affected, or treat those who already have this condition?
Medical research holds the key. The UK has pioneering researchers, doctors and scientists who dedicate their lives to understanding these conditions. Working every day to unravel the ‘why?’, ‘how?’ and ‘what next?’ questions that are on every family’s lips.
They can only work if funds are available to allow them to continue in their dedicated search for answers. For many families where there is a genetic cause to their child’s condition, knowing what the future would hold for any further children is vitally important, as it will be for the brothers and sister of that child when they come to have children themselves.
For others, finding out what is the best treatment or care that it is possible to give their child is the motivation. Research can also be essential to reduce the progress of a condition or to relieve the symptoms.
For families with a race against time the management of a terminal condition is paramount in their minds and lives. Medical research holds the key, but who has the funds to unlock the doors?
For 17 years we have been funding medical research at leading hospitals and universities around the UK. Research that has found genes, aided diagnosis, added to the building blocks of knowledge to increase understanding and responses to conditions. Research that has developed new tests and along the way aided the training of young doctors in understanding more about conditions and the needs of patients and families when they attend clinics nationwide.
Medical research holds the key, we can only unlock the doors with sufficient funding to start to answer these vital questions. Newlife Foundation is committed to continuing to support UK based research.
Applying for a Medical Research Grant
Applications for grants must come from Researchers at established research units in the UK. Each year we invite applications for grants by placing advertisements in leading medical and scientific journals. Most of the grants we give are peer reviewed by an eminent Medical and Scientific Panel led by Newlife’s Medical Director.
