Whats the difference between an accessible toilet and a Changing Places?
A standard accessible toilet meets the needs of many disabled people and usually includes a higher W.C, a selection of rails around the toilet, and has a basin within, their design varies and they may not meet the needs of everyone. They may be smaller and may not include specialist equipment such as changing benches, hoists or space to turn with mobility equipment. They may not be fully accessible due to steps or heavy doors at the approach. Often these facilities are also used as baby change areas and have sanitary bins and other items within them.
A Changing Places toilet is designed for people who need extra space, support, or equipment. These toilets are much larger and are created with an enhanced design specification which, although there can be variations, include features that help disabled people use the toilet safely, comfortably, and with dignity and support safer moving and assisting by parents and carers.
Standard accessible toilet
- Usually has a range of grab rails and space for a wheelchair.
- Does not usually have an adult-sized changing bench.
- Does not usually have a hoist.
- May not have enough room for carers or family members to provide support.
Changing Places toilet
- Designed for people with more complex needs.
- Includes an adult-sized height-adjustable changing bench.
- Has a hoist to help people move safely (slings are not usually provided).
- Provides enough space for the disabled person and up to two carers or family members.
- Offers more privacy, comfort, and dignity.
