Ivy’s mum, Sophie, told us “having access to the Newlife sensory toy scheme has made such a difference to our family. As a mum to a child with very complex needs, finding toys that she can actually enjoy and engage with isn’t easy, and buying lots of specialist sensory toys just isn’t affordable.”
“Ivy is often poorly because of her seizures, so we spend a lot of time at home or in hospital, and having these sensory resources available makes those days easier. Her favourites are the switch-adapted singing elephant, the night light sea turtle that helps her settle at bedtime, and the soft rainbow fish with all its different textures (which she loves to swipe her hands across as she can’t grasp toys very well.) These toys give her opportunities to play in ways that are meaningful but easy for her, while also helping her regulate. They also bring her and her younger brother together, who is autistic, as they can enjoy the sensory and learning experiences together. It’s also helped her brother to interact with her a little more easily through shared play.”
“Having resources like these at home means that, even when we’re unable to go out because she’s unwell, she still has opportunities to play, learn and experience joy. It gives us wonderful moments together as a family, helps us understand what she enjoys, and brings some normality and happiness into our home during what can often be very challenging times.”
